Swedish candy brand Sockerbit is entering the national natural grocery channel through a two-tier partnership with Sprouts Farmers Market, marking the first time a Swedish Pick & Mix program has appeared in a U.S. specialty grocery chain of this scale. Packaged product is rolling into nearly 500 Sprouts stores nationwide in October, while a full bulk Pick & Mix experience — 12 candy varieties, shoppers building their own mix — launched September 30 in 17 stores across California and Florida.
The deal is a meaningful distribution inflection point for a brand that has operated primarily through its own storefronts and e-commerce since 2010. Sprouts, which operates more than 500 stores in 25 states and employs approximately 36,000 team members, gives Sockerbit immediate reach into a consumer base already primed for better-ingredient positioning. The packaged assortment carries no high-fructose corn syrup or Red 40, and uses natural flavors and colors — a clean-label profile that maps directly to Sprouts' category thesis.
The Format Signal
What makes this pilot worth tracking is the format itself. Bulk Pick & Mix is inherently experiential — it asks the shopper to slow down, choose, and build. That model has worked for Sockerbit in its own retail, but translating it into a natural grocery aisle is an operational and merchandising test. Four of the 12 bulk varieties are exclusive to Sprouts, and two new Dream Series flavors — Banana Dream and Sour Berry Dream — are debuting here rather than in the brand's own channels. The original Strawberry Dream is the brand's best-selling item; extending that line via a retail partner rather than through DTC suggests Sockerbit is using exclusives strategically to anchor the wholesale relationship.
Sockerbit co-founder Stefan Ernberg framed the launch in terms of cultural transmission rather than distribution math: "Pick & Mix has always been part of how I grew up with candy. My 85-year-old mother has been taking part in this tradition for nearly 75 years and still does today. It's about choosing your favorites, trying something new, and sharing the experience with the people around you." Positioning a candy format as a generational ritual rather than a snack category gives the brand a story that specialty grocery buyers can build a section around — which matters when you're competing for square footage in a curated bulk department.
What Operators Should Watch
For foodservice and specialty retail operators evaluating experiential or interactive merchandise formats, the Sockerbit-Sprouts structure offers a useful test case. The 17-store pilot in two high-density markets allows the brand and retailer to measure basket attachment, bulk throughput, and shrink before committing the format to a broader door count. That staged approach is increasingly common among better-for-you brands entering natural and specialty channels, where buyers want proof of velocity before scaling shelf space.
The Sprouts entry also signals something broader about how European confectionery formats are finding U.S. retail traction. Brands in the brand-launch pipeline are watching whether a format-first story — one that sells a ritual, not just a product — can drive trial without traditional promotional spend. Operators sourcing for specialty snack or confectionery programs, and retail buyers tracking candy category trends, should note that the clean-label angle here is table stakes; the differentiation is entirely in the format and the storytelling layered around it.
