Food and beverage operators relying on third-party testing and regulatory compliance just saw their vendor landscape shift significantly. Mérieux NutriSciences has closed its acquisition of Certified Group, a deal first announced in August 2026, creating what the company describes as North America's leading food Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC) provider.
Certified Group brings approximately $300 million in annual revenue, 31 laboratories, more than 1,600 employees, and a bench of over 170 independent regulatory consultants operating across the United States and Canada. Combined with Mérieux NutriSciences' existing network of more than 160 accredited laboratories globally and a workforce exceeding 11,600, the merged entity represents a materially different scale of coverage than any single competitor currently offers in the North American market.
What Operators Gain
For food and beverage producers, the practical implication is access to a broader, more integrated testing portfolio under one commercial relationship. Certified Group's Food Safety Net Services (FSNS) network has a strong standing in animal protein — a category where turnaround speed and lab proximity to processing facilities are operationally critical. The combined footprint also covers dairy, packaged foods, nuts, and spices, and extends into cosmetics, OTC products, and dietary supplements through Certified Laboratories, plus reduced-harm nicotine product testing via Labstat International.
Regulatory consulting capacity is another meaningful addition. EAS Consulting Group, part of the Certified Group portfolio, provides expert FDA and USDA regulatory support — a service set that has become increasingly valuable as operators navigate labeling compliance, novel ingredient approvals, and evolving import/export requirements. For mid-size manufacturers that lack in-house regulatory affairs teams, access to 170-plus independent consultants through a single testing partner is a procurement efficiency most previously had to assemble from multiple vendors.
Procurement Signal for F&B Buyers
The financing structure of the deal warrants attention from operators evaluating long-term vendor stability. New minority shareholders Peugeot Invest and Continental Grain Company joined the transaction alongside existing Mérieux NutriSciences backers Institut Mérieux, Sofina, and Dassault Group. That breadth of institutional support — spanning European family offices and a major U.S. agricultural holding company in Continental Grain — signals durable capital backing rather than a private-equity exit play.
"Through this nationwide analytical network, customers now have access to a truly comprehensive portfolio of routine testing, specialized analysis, expert regulatory support, and more," said Sébastien Moulard, President North America at Mérieux NutriSciences. The language around localized, time-sensitive needs is deliberate: the company is positioning proximity-to-production as a competitive differentiator, which matters most to operators running perishable or high-volume protein lines where lab delays carry direct cost.
For procurement teams currently managing multiple TIC vendor relationships — separate labs for microbiology, chemistry, regulatory, and certification — this consolidation raises a practical question worth evaluating now: whether renegotiating toward a single national testing partner delivers better SLA terms, faster turnaround, and reduced administrative overhead. Operators in the marketplace for new compliance vendors should request updated capability maps from both legacy Mérieux and legacy Certified Group account teams before contract renewals.
The deal also signals continued consolidation pressure across the food safety services sector. Smaller regional labs and niche testing specialists will feel margin and volume pressure as a combined entity of this scale competes on breadth and speed. Operators leaning on boutique testing providers should assess whether those partners have the geographic coverage and accreditation depth to remain reliable as regulatory scrutiny of supply chains intensifies — a trend tracked consistently in operator intelligence on procurement shifts.
